If I had the opportunity to study at Victoria University Melbourne, I will choose the field of Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering).
Why would I choose Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering)? It is because engineering technology can be learned and be used for Environmental Engineering. By environmental engineering, I mean, it is can be used for the good of conserving nature. By studying Civil Engineering, I want to improve the engineering technology that my country has. Improvement I’m looking for is the improvement in technology of building city layout or port harbor. My country, Indonesia, had lot of bad city layout and port harbor, it was also my reason for choosing this course. I want to help my country to build a better coastal city or port harbor.
First of all, let me tell you that Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world comprising of 17,508 islands which span more than 5,000 km (around 3,200 miles) eastward from Sabang in northern Sumatra to Merauke in Papua. Indonesia is a country that has second longest coastline in the world after Canada, its length around 54,716 km (33,998 miles). Some of them has been well used and well built, but there are still a lot of it that hasn’t been built and with bad and unsustainable environmental layout. With city layout which unfriendly to environmental, it will affect Indonesian sea sooner or later.
Indonesia is a country that has nearly 75% of sea, thus environmental friendly city layout is needed. City layout doesn’t only affect the environment but also affect the people. It is affecting them from the way of living, for example building a dock for fisherman. Building a dock I think we have to think how the fisherman will carry their fuel, catch, and also their equipment without affecting the environment, but currently a lot of coastal city in Indonesia hadn’t been built like that.
Australia has a lot of city with coastline and good friendly environmental city layout. By studying there, I can study a lot of different city layout that has well built environmental development, for example is Melbourne. From what I read Melbourne is a coastal city and I think it has a very good city layout and environmental friendly too. I can take example in Melbourne city how the system and city layout work. It is in civil engineering.
Civil engineering course in Victoria University Melbourne offer a very good course including water supply and wastewater systems, irrigation, drainage and flood protection systems, bridges, roads and transport systems, port harbor and airport facilities which in my opinion is very interesting and it can be used in for good use in my country, it is my intention.
Why I think it is very interesting course, because I’m currently studying Marine Science at Padjajaran University, Sumedang, Indonesia. I have been too few places in Indonesia learning a lot about Indonesian sea, about coastal city layout in Indonesia but a lot of them not friendly to environmental. Because by following the course of Engineering Technology in Victoria University Melbourne I think I can help building a better place in Indonesia. This course is the one I need and I think Victoria University offer one of the best courses.
Another reason is I’m very interested in having experience living in Australia. I want to know how many facilities and organization that help Australia maintain the population of local endemic animals, I want to studying how the conservation systems work. Living in Australia is one of my dream because Australia has so many things that I’m so interested in. I wish I can have the opportunity studying Civil Engineering in Victoria University Melbourne.
